Kedarnath Mandir is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is located in the Garhwal Himalayan range near the Mandakini River in Kedarnath. It is one of the Jyotirlinga temples and forms part of the Chota Char Dham circuit. During the winter months, the vigrahas (deities) from Kedarnath Temple are brought to Ukhimath and worshipped there for six months. Lord Shiva is venerated here as Kedarnath, the ‘Lord of Kedar Khand,’ the historical name of the region.
The temple is situated at an elevation of 3,583 meters (11,755 feet), 223 km from Rishikesh, on the shores of the Mandakini River, a tributary of the Ganga. The temple is an impressive stone edifice of unknown date, though it is believed to have been constructed in the 8th century AD during the visit of Adi Shankara. The present structure is located on a site adjacent to where the Pandavas are believed to have originally built the temple. The temple complex consists of a Garbhagriha (sanctum) and a Mandapa (hall) and stands on a plateau surrounded by snow-clad mountains and glaciers. In front of the temple, directly opposite the inner shrine, is a Nandi statue carved from a single rock.
